Programs

In 2023, UMBC made a strategic commitment to develop aspiring and current leaders through a multi-year leadership development investment. Managed by the Human Resources & Strategic Talent Management (HRSTM) department, the LEADS Academy offers a diverse series of cohort programs tailored for leaders at every level of the institution.


The Leadership Pipeline

ASPIRE: For Aspiring Leaders

  • Target Audience: Individual contributors curious about the path to leadership.
  • Focus: Harnessing practices to successfully lead oneself and others. Appropriate for employees at any level looking to build a foundation for future roles.

LAUNCH: For New Supervisors (Required)

  • Target Audience: New managers or managers new to UMBC.
  • Focus: A self-paced academy designed to cover the basic yet critical HR aspects of supervision and UMBC’s specific management expectations.

LEAP: For People Managers

  • Target Audience: New managers transitioning from individual contributors, or existing supervisors needing a “tune-up.”
  • Focus: Critical skills for supporting individual contributors and teams, including effective delegation, coaching for performance, and giving feedback.

RISE: For Leaders of Leaders

  • Target Audience: Mid-level to executive leaders (e.g., Assistant Directors, Directors, Department Chairs, Associate Vice Presidents).
  • Focus: Departmental and functional leadership with an emphasis on strategic management and leading other supervisors.

PEAK: For Senior Executives

  • Target Audience: Most senior levels (e.g., Deans, Vice Presidents, Provost).
  • Focus: Curated leadership experiences for those who strategically lead divisions and the broader organization for long-term impact.

The Building Bridges Program for administrative support staff fosters professional/leadership development, collaboration, and idea sharing between select employees at McDaniel College, Loyola University of Maryland, Goucher College, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Towson University, the University of Baltimore, the University of Maryland Baltimore and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Up to 5 individuals from each university are nominated by Vice Presidents, Vice Provost, and Deans to participate each Fall.
