New Position Request

Use this page when your department needs to establish a new position number for work that is not currently assigned to an existing position.

Before recruiting: A new position should be reviewed before recruitment begins so the title, duties, pay range, and funding information are aligned.

When to Use This Process

Use the New Position Request process when your department is adding new work, creating a new role, or establishing a Regular or Contingent II position before recruitment.

What HRSTM Reviews

  • Whether the position is full-time or part-time.
  • Whether the position is regular or temporary.
  • The nature and level of duties.
  • The level of decision-making authority.
  • Whether the position is exempt, nonexempt, or academic.
  • The impact on existing positions in the department.
  • Market alignment and internal consistency.

What You Need

Position Description

Document the duties, responsibilities, reporting structure, and purpose of the position.

Updated Organization Chart

Show where the new position fits within the department or unit.

Funding Source and Combination Code

Confirm the funding source and combination code before submitting the request.

Payroll Title or Title Code

Identify the appropriate payroll title or title code when available.
