Reviews & Reclassification

Use this page when a vacant or occupied position needs review because duties, responsibilities, complexity, title, or compensation level may have changed.

Before submitting: Confirm whether the position is vacant or occupied, prepare an updated position description, and confirm funding information before submitting a Classification Action Request.

What Is a Position Review?

A position review, sometimes called a job audit or reclassification review, evaluates whether a position’s current duties and responsibilities align with its title, classification, and compensation level.

When to Use This Process

  • Duties have substantially changed.
  • The level of complexity or responsibility has increased.
  • A vacant position needs review before recruitment.
  • An occupied position may need reclassification.
  • The department is unsure whether the current title or classification is still appropriate.

Vacant vs. Occupied Reviews

Vacant Position Review

Use this when a position is vacant and may need review before recruitment begins.

Vacant reviews are generally focused on the position duties, department needs, title, classification, and salary range before posting.

Occupied Position Review

Use this when the position is currently filled and the assigned duties have substantially changed.

Occupied reviews may require review of the employee’s qualifications and additional documentation.

Process Overview

  1. Prepare the Classification Action Request and required documentation.
  2. Submit the request to HRSTM Classification/Compensation.
  3. HRSTM reviews the position history, updated duties, and comparable classifications.
  4. The department is notified of the result.
  5. If approved, the department completes the appropriate follow-up action before recruitment or payroll processing.
